{"id":67400,"date":"2015-07-31T16:55:24","date_gmt":"2015-07-31T20:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=67400"},"modified":"2019-12-18T16:06:30","modified_gmt":"2019-12-18T21:06:30","slug":"john-gavin-strikes-a-chord-in-ucfbusiness-failure-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/john-gavin-strikes-a-chord-in-ucfbusiness-failure-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"John Gavin Strikes a Chord in #UCFBusiness Failure Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Music education major John Gavin became the first non-business student to win the UCF College of Business (#UCFBusiness) Failure Competition this month, earning $500 and a letter of recommendation from Dean Paul Jarley, Ph.D. Second and third place winners Jonathon Valin and Ida Santiago were awarded $300 and $200, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>This is the seventh semester that the Failure Competition has been held, but only the second one open to all enrolled UCF students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting comfortable with failure is a key step in becoming a better risk\u2013taker and successful business leader,\u201d said Dean Jarley in a blog post. \u201cThat is why we celebrate failure and persistence in the college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an essay and video posted to Dean Jarley\u2019s blog (<a href=\"https:\/\/business.ucf.edu\/person\/paul-jarley\/\">https:\/\/business.ucf.edu\/person\/paul-jarley\/<\/a>), Gavin described a series of setbacks he encountered in college as he worked to achieve his dream of being a professional musician. He was rejected by the UCF Music Department and cut from three separate drum corps. Still, he persevered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery audition is an opportunity for success or failure,\u201d said Gavin. \u201cPeople never see the hundreds of thousands of hours musicians must spend alone in a practice room.
