{"id":136108,"date":"2023-07-05T12:00:04","date_gmt":"2023-07-05T16:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=136108"},"modified":"2026-04-22T11:28:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T15:28:29","slug":"ucf-aging-expert-named-2023-american-academy-of-nursing-fellow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-aging-expert-named-2023-american-academy-of-nursing-fellow\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Aging Expert Named 2023 American Academy of Nursing Fellow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.ucf.edu\/people\/ladda-thiamwong\/\">Ladda Thiamwong<\/a>, associate professor in UCF\u2019s College of Nursing, is one of 253 distinguished nurse leaders \u2014 and among four in Florida \u2014 who have been named to the 2023 class of fellows by the American Academy of Nursing.<\/p>\n<p>The prestigious honor recognizes substantial, sustained and outstanding impact on health and healthcare. This year\u2019s inductees, which represent 40 states, the District of Columbia, and 13 countries, will be recognized during the Academy\u2019s annual Health Policy Conference in October in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s group of inductees truly represents today\u2019s thought leaders and the [range] of our profession\u2019s policy leaders, practitioners, educators, and innovators,\u201d says Kenneth White, president of the American Academy of Nursing, in a statement. \u201cEach fellow of the academy is changing the future of health and healthcare through their support to &#8230; lift up the next generation of nurses, advancing the academy\u2019s vision of healthy lives for all people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A nationally recognized expert on aging, Thiamwong has made significant contributions to promoting healthy aging and reducing health inequalities. She developed the Healthy Aging Instrument to assess processes involved in healthy aging, which has been used in research institutions in nine countries.<\/p>\n<p>Her pioneering research focuses on fall prevention using innovative technology framed on the mind and body connection. Falls are the second leading cause of injury and death worldwide among older adults, and disproportionately impact people facing economic hardship.<\/p>\n<p>Thiamwong has been recently awarded more than $6 million in funding for her research. One of her studies was the first in the nation to examine the associations among fall risk appraisal, body composition and physical activity using assistive health technology and activity monitoring devices.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, she is leading an interdisciplinary team 色花堂 researchers on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-team-awarded-2-3m-grant-for-innovative-intervention-to-prevent-falls\/\">$2.3 million project funded by the National Institutes of Health<\/a> (NIH) to conduct a large-scale pilot of their innovative intervention to prevent falls in low-income senior communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough her research and international collaborations, Dr. Thiamwong has made a substantial impact in the area of fall prevention in &#8230; older adults [from a range of backgrounds], with a focus on those who reside in the community and have [fewer available] resources,\u201d says Mary Lou Sole, dean of <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.ucf.edu\/\">UCF\u2019s College of Nursing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her research, Thiamwong is committed to advocating for older adults and is actively engaged in community service. Most recently, she has served on the City of Orlando Mayor\u2019s Committee on Livability and Healthy Aging, chairs the Aging\/Gerontology Research Interest and Implementation Group of the Southern Nursing Research Society, and is a member of both the NIH Health Promotion in Communities and the Community Influences on Health Behavior study sections.<\/p>\n<p>Thiamwong has received several awards for her contributions to the field, including a Catalyst Award from the U.S. National Academy of Medicine Healthy Longevity Global Grand Challenge, the Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing Award from the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence, and the Excellence in Geriatric Nursing Research Mid-Career Award from the Aging\/Gerontology Research Interest and
