mechanical engineering/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nMy life has changed since Artemis 1. /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nThree months after the mission, I gave birth to my son, Isaiah. We live in Merritt Island, so whenever there/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019s a launch now, I seize the opportunity to take him outside and feel the rumble. I know he/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019ll appreciate it more as he gets older. Someday, when he sees future Artemis missions, he/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019ll say, /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u201cMy mom helped to create the capability for getting humans to space./news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u201d/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nSee the very top of the rocket? /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nThat/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019s the Orion spacecraft, which is comprised of the crew module, service module and launch abort system. It/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019s what our team tests /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2014 every system, one at a time, and then again after it/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019s all integrated. The testing ensures the spacecraft can withstand a trip into space and back. Some of the tests include vacuum and thermal tests to simulate extreme differences in pressure and temperature, acoustic tests to see there/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019s no loss of function from intense vibrations at liftoff or throughout the mission and end to end tests to double-check that the systems work after they/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019re assembled. The tests are critical to make sure everything holds together for the astronauts for Artemis 2 and beyond./news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nNo one knew the name of the Artemis mission when I started 12 years ago. /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nThe shuttle program was ending and a new excitement was starting to grow about something else /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2014 something big. I started working on Orion when the first structures for Artemis 1 came in, and that/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019s when it hit me: I was working on hardware that would someday be in space. We/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019re always worked ahead. When Artemis 1 launched, our test team was already performing Artemis 2 and 3 testing./news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nMy interest in space started with books. /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nAs a child I loved reading /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2014 books, magazines, cereal boxes, anything with words. One day I was picking up some books off the floor of the library and saw a cover with multiple galaxies. It looked interesting, so I opened the book and saw a question: /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u201cHow do you know if there are planets and other solar systems?/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u201d I thought it was amazing that people do this as a job./news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nMom had different ideas for my future. /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nShe and my dad are of Indian heritage and grew up in Trinidad. They preferred I become a doctor or accountant. When I told mom I wanted to go into aerospace engineering at UCF, she jokingly said, /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u201cWhat are you going to do with that degree? Are you going to take me to the moon?/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u201d I distinctly remember that conversation now and smile because I do have a role in sending people back to the moon, and she/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019s very supportive of my career./news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nWhat we/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019re doing is instrumental for the future of society. /news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/nI/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019ve had the amazing privilege to see the Orion spacecraft come together, piece by piece, from the beginning. The Apollo missions gave us tremendous benefits, like advances in medicine and technology. We/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/u2019ve already learned so much from the first Artemis launch that I have no doubt these missions will enrich lives for generations in ways we cannot yet comprehend./news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Meet three UCF alums helping to send Artemis 2 astronauts on a round-trip mission to the moon./news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/n","protected":false},"author":57,"featured_media":135778,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"lazy_load_responsive_images_disabled":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":"","_wp_rev_ctl_limit":""},"categories":[15992,24],"tags":[18215,54179,973,13268,17393,4361,202],"tu_author":[],"class_list":["post-135772","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-alumni","category-science-technology","tag-aerospace-and-defense","tag-artemis","tag-college-of-engineering-and-computer-science","tag-department-of-industrial-engineering-and-management-systems","tag-department-of-mechanical-and-aerospace-engineering","tag-space","tag-alumni"],"yoast_head":"/news/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/135772/n
